HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

About this course

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty, in line with guidelines set by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other national peak clinical bodies. It's recommended for anyone designated as the first aid officer in a workplace, as well as individuals seeking a broader, more complete first aid skill set than CPR alone.

This course includes both:

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support

What you'll be able to do

  • Assess a first aid situation and decide on the appropriate response

  • Call for emergency assistance and provide accurate information

  • Perform CPR on adults and children

  • Manage common injuries, illnesses, and medical emergencies

  • Treat anaphylaxis, asthma, heat attack, stroke and choking

  • Manage bleeding, shock, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, and minor wounds

  • Apply basic life support principles until medical help arrives

Training formats

Face-to-Face
A fully hands-on 6.5-hour session with no pre-learning required. Delivered in small groups with direct trainer guidance, using adult and infant manikins throughout.

Blended (Online + Practical)
Complete 3 hours of self-paced online learning, then attend a 1-hour practical session to demonstrate your skills. Ideal for those who want to minimise time away from work or home.

How you're assessed

  • Practical: 2 minutes of continuous, uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin (floor-based), an infant CPR demonstration, and correct AED operation, first aid skills covering a range of issues.

  • Theory: A multiple choice knowledge check confirming knowledge

What to know before you book

  • No prior experience needed — we start from scratch

  • Minimum age 14 (guardian consent required for under-18s)

  • A valid USI is required to receive your certification

  • CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions, in order for an accredited certificate to be issued

  • Wear comfortable clothing — practical sessions may involve kneeling, bending, and lying on the floor; pants and flat shoes are recommended

Certification

On successful completion, you'll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID011, valid for 3 years. In line with the Code of Practice and Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, we recommend refreshing your CPR skills annually.
