This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to minimise further injury to a casualty with a suspected spinal injury when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid.

The unit applies to personnel from emergency services, volunteer organisations or organisations which provide a first aid service in an environment where there is a risk of spinal injuries.

    This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to minimise further injury to a casualty with a suspected spinal injury when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid.

The PUAEME007 Provide emergency care for suspected spinal injury involves the skills and knowledge required to minimise further injury to a casualty when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid. It includes recognition and management of a suspected spinal injury, immobilising cervical spine, evaluating the need to move a casualty, preparing a casualty for transport, transporting and monitoring a casualty, and performing a casualty handover. The comprehensive course training comprises of practical training plus theory training.

The course structure involves simulated real life scenarios which could appear in the community, sporting and/or workplace settings. This allows students to demonstrate application of their skills and knowledge. This course includes the following elements;

  • Anatomy of the spine

  • Mechanism of injury/signs and symptoms

  • Suspected spinal injury management

  • Practical scenarios involving the assessment and management of Suspected Spinal Injuries

  • Injury reporting

  • Theory Assessment

Pre Requisite - HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is a pre-requisite unit for this course, student must produce evidence of a current certificate to participate in this course.

 

Students must be at least 16 years of age at the time of attendance.​

Due to the nature of the course we require a minimum of 5 attendees to successfully run this course. First Aid and Fire will be in communication with all attendees in the unlikely event this course does not have sufficient attendance.

Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. Pants and flat shoes are recommended.

The PUAEME007 Provide emergency care for suspected spinal injury certificate is valid for 3 years. 

The Code of Practice and Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that first aid skills are refreshed every three years.
